Foundation in Psychology

The aim of this module is to develop an understanding of foundational Psychology theories, approaches, concepts, nature and nurture influences on human behavior and mental processes. A secondary aim is to develop an understanding of self and other.

At the end of this module , students will know:

  1. Basic theories explaining human lifespan cognitive, psycho sexual,psycho-social, language, and moral development
  2. Basic theoretical orientations to Psychology
  3. What distinguishes sensation and perception and their basic processes
  4. Varying conceptualizations of self, other, and consciousness

Ethical Issues in Counseling Psychology

The aim of this module is to develop an understanding of ethics in the context of counseling; to learn to think critically about ethical issues,in relation to counseling clients; and to learn to balance a variety of ethical and legal imperatives.

At the end of this module , students will know:

  1. The basic core ethical principles in counseling
  2. How to balance ethical principles,legal requirements,and standard practice protocol while satisfying the needs and demands of minors and their guardians, and in the cases of other marginalized clients
  3. How to actively listen and respond non judgmentally
  4. What constitutes informed consent and confidentiality
  5. Ethical assessment and diagnostic considerations 6. How to appropriately negotiate ethical issues in a multicultural

Child and Adolescent Development

The aim of this subject is to develop an understanding of the sequence and processes of physical, social, cognitive, and emotional development of children from prenatal to 18 years.

At the end of this program, students will know:

  1. How to identify sequence and processes of child and adolescent development
  2. About the inter-dependency of all aspects of development
  3. To appreciate the impact of context and culture on child and adolescent development
  4. Major theories of child and adolescent development, their strengths and weaknesses
  5. How to support healthy development in children and adolescents

Childhood Disorders

The aim of this subject is to develop an understanding of childhood mental, developmental,and personality disorders, how these disorders express specifically in childhood,and the differing presentation for childhood on set disorders. A secondary aim is to learn techniques for helping challenged children with disorders to live a more satisfying life.

At the end of this program, students will know:

  1. How to identify disorders of childhood and characteristics of childhood on set
  2. Techniques for helping and encouraging children who are challenged with disorders to participate in managing the impact on their daily lives
  3. Techniques for encouraging parents and colleagues in supporting children who struggle with the impact of childhood disorders
  4. How to minimize negative personal and social consequences of living with a label
  5. Techniques for care giving a when assisting children with disorders

Personality Disorders

The aim of this subject is to develop an understanding of personality disorders,how these disorders express,and the differing presentation for childhood on set personality disorders. A secondary aim is to learn techniques for helping people who are challenged with personality disorders to live a more satisfying and productive life.

At the end of this program, students will know:

  1. How to identify personality disorders
  2. Techniques for helping and encouraging people who are challenged with disorders to participate in managing the impact on their daily lives
  3. Techniques for encouraging family,colleagues,and community members in supporting those who struggle with the impact of personality disorders
  4. How to minimize negative personal and social consequences of living with a label

Creative Arts Therapy

The aim of this subjectis to develop a capacity for encouraging therapeutic expressionin children and adolescents through the creativeuse of drama, puppetry,sand play, music, and art.

At the end of this program, students will know:

  1. The basic theories and concepts of expressive arts therapy
  2. How to use drama, puppetry,masks, sand play, music, and art, at a basic level,to encourage expression and resolution in children and adolescents
  3. How to systematically work with groups of children and adolescents toward self- expression and increased well being
  4. How to use respectfulness distancing features of expressive arts therapy
  5. How to respect personal process in expressive arts therapy
